Welcone Superintendent Katie Smith

The Depew Union Free School District (UFSD) Board of Education (BOE) has announced the new Superintendent of Schools, Katie Smith.

Smith will fill the position in July, taking over for Interim Superintendent Jeffrey R. Rabey Ph.D. who has helped in this role since the summer of 2024.

Smith currently serves as the Director of Human Resources for North Tonawanda City Schools, where she has taken on multiple leadership roles. Previous school administration positions include Principal and Assistant Principal. For 10 years before her roles in North Tonawanda, she worked as an elementary teacher and data coach for the Lancaster Central School District.

Smith completed her participation in the Future Superintendents’ Academy sponsored by LEAF. She attained a master’s degree in educational leadership from Niagara University and a master’s degree in literacy from the State University at Buffalo, as well as a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Canisius College.

Her three-year contract will become effective July 1, 2025.

“We thank Dr. Rabey for his help leading our district as we continued the search for our next superintendent,” BOE President Todd Bush said. “We look forward to working with Katie Smith as she moves our district forward in the years to come.”
