NYSSCA Region 9 Newsletter heading featuring Kim McEwen

Congratulations to Depew UFSD's very own Kim McEwen for being recognized as a Master Counselor by the New York State School Counselor Association (NYSSCA). You can read more about Kim in NYSSCA's article below:

Kim earned her B.A. in Psychology and M.S. in Counselor Education from Canisius University. She began her School Counseling career in the Depew Union Free School District in 1997, initially splitting her time between Cayuga Heights Elementary and Depew Middle School before transitioning to Depew High School.

Kim supports students in grades 9-12 with academic, social-emotional, and post-secondary planning needs. She has served on various committees, including the Depew Student Assistance Team, Shared Decision-Making; and the National Honor Society Faculty Council. She is Co-Advisor of Depew's GSA and Key Club.

Kim's initiatives at Depew include the Skilled Trades Expo, which will enter its fourth year in the spring of 2025. In response to COVID-19, she led her department in developing essential SEL professional development for teachers and support staff. She was recognized as the Depew Teachers Organization "Educator of the Year" in 2020-2021 for her significant contributions to the school community. Outside of the school, she was an Interviewer at Daemen University's Scholars Day for a number of years and served on the Secondary School Counselor Advisory Board for the University of Buffalo. She was selected to be part of the NYS Department of Labor Teacher Ambassador program in the summer of 2023 and the NYS

Clean Energy Educators Institute in Buffalo during the summer of 2024.

Kim is a member of the ASCA, NYSSCA, NYSACAC and the HSCA of WNY, where she served as President from 2007-2009. Outside of her professional commitments, Kim enjoys thrift shopping, birdwatching, taking care of her dogs and spending time outdoors.
