Congratulations to Depew Middle School's eighth-grade Innovation Station students on a successful run at the Third Annual Cardboard Arcade Challenge.
More than two dozen Depew students participated in the January 8 competition against over 200 students from seven other schools.
The team of Donovan Seawood, Samantha Schilling, Selena Pierce and Edison Riccio won the Player’s Choice Award for their game, “Crossbow Blitz.” In addition to using Make Code and a Microbit, they independently 3D printed their own “Nerf-style" crossbow. They earned one of two unique, 3D-printed trophies.
Depew students worked for months ahead of the competition, learning about and applying the Engineering Design Process, Scratch Coding, Make Code, Makey Makey, Microbits and more. The teams of students took what they learned to design their own arcade games out of mostly cardboard, adding technology as well.
Students competed in about ten categories.
This year’s event was held at Key Bank Arena for the first time, which allowed the competitors to also watch part of a Sabres practice.
