An Awesome Partnership – Athletics and Academics

Success in life is something frequently mentioned to our student-athletes by their parents, their teachers and their coaches. Measuring it is done in a variety of ways. In athletics, it is quite often based on won-loss records.  Here at Depew our teams have significant victories, yet in the classroom, they are also our winners.

Season after season, athletes have above average grades when compared to those students who are not participating in athletics. This accomplishment is especially noteworthy when the workload of the student-athlete is reviewed. The balance between a heavy practice/competition schedule and a serious time commitment to the classroom is extraordinary.

Scholar-Athletes

With each year, numerous awards are earned by Depew student-athletes in the classroom and on the playing field. With the completion of the Fall ’08 sports season, all 10 of our varsity teams earned the NYS Scholar Athlete team distinction, granted when a predetermined (by NYS) number of athletes on each team earn a grade averaging 90 or better during their season. This tradition goes back to 1992 with a State championship earned by Girls’ Track.  Since that time, 229 teams have been recognized.

Section VI, composed of ninety-one schools in western New York, names an All-Academic team at the end of each season. This is a highly selective process. Two Depew students qualified for this honor; Jamie Wasielewski, cross country, GPA 100, and Brad Barth, football, GPA 95.33, were chosen for this well deserved recognition.

Many might argue that interscholastic sports attract students who are high achievers while others might contend that athletic experiences develop traits such as responsibility and persistence together with problem solving and goal setting skills. In either case, the fact is that a sound mind and a sound body makes excellent partners here at Depew. This attitude can be found among our athletes, their families, our coaches -  the entire Wildcat family.

Sincerely,

Dan McGrath

Director of Physical Education and Athletics
